About half of men who have sex with men said they had reduced their number of sexual and dating partners in response to the monkeypox outbreak, according to a survey released Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

However, local public health officials have been cautious in recommending an abstinence-only approach during the outbreak, with many pointing out that this strategy is unlikely to be effective, despite being favored by the federal government in the face of to the HIV/AIDS epidemic during the 1980s and 1990s.

Instead of advising against stopping sex, officials advised men who have sex with men to practice safer sex. This includes performing a visual inspection of all potential sex partners for possible monkeypox lesions, through which the virus primarily spreads.

The most recent federal data shows that more than 14,000 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the United States. According to demographic data made available by the CDC, more than 95% of cases are in men, although this data appears to be incomplete, with only about 9,600 cases considered in the demographic breakdown.

Approximately 145 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in female patients, 18 cases in transgender men and 33 cases in transgender women. About 150 cases are believed to be among people between the ages of zero and 20.
