COSI After Dark will feature a costume contest, music and adult drinks

The Center for Science and Industry (COSI) attracts visitors of all ages day in and day out, but for some of its patrons, the center comes alive after hours.

Bi-monthly COSI After Dark events are limited to those 21 and older who wish to experience the exhibits at the center without the presence of children.

“The general idea behind After Dark is for adults to explore COSI without children,” said Kristy Williams, director of communications at the center. “It’s so cool to see people interacting with our hands-on science activities without children. Here, adults have as much fun as children. »

In addition to learning about the educational offerings expected at COSI, adult-only events feature additional elements related to specific themes. This month, guests are invited to get into a spooky state of mind with “Nightmare on Broad St.”, which will take place from 7-10 p.m. on October 13.

During the event, all of COSI is open for exploration, but some areas are transformed into spooky spaces.

“We’re going to have a haunted house in our ‘Progress’ exhibit,” Williams said, adding that in the space that recently housed the Marvel Superhero exhibit, a fall festival-style setup in the gallery will include lawn games including cornhole, trash pong and more.

A DJ will provide spooky sounds and Glass Axis artists will be on hand to create glass pumpkins, monsters and ghosts.

“They interact with the public and also respond to public inquiries, so if you have something you want to see done by a talented glassblower, they’ll be right here,” Williams said.

A costume contest, to which participants can register upon arrival, will award prizes to the first three winners in the individual and collective categories.

“You can be scary, you can be funny, interesting, unique,” Williams said. “We really want to see people dressed in their best.”

Prior to entry, attendees must present current photo ID that includes a date of birth, which will come in handy for those wishing to attend the full bar with beer and wine options.

“You’re given a wristband, that way when you go to buy booze, you don’t have to get checked every time,” Williams said. “It’s actually very convenient.”

And, if you’ve had your fill of Halloween-related activities, there’s always the rest of COSI to explore.

“If you just want to go see (the exhibition) ‘Ocean’ and play with the activities of ‘Ocean’. . . there’s nothing stopping you,” Williams said. “No children will be there, and you can play as if you were a child.”
