Kippo CEO David Park sees social gaming as the new way to date

Kippo, a startup that creates a dating app for gamers was started by a former Wall Street trader and engineer Raya whose codes helped predict stock success.

But David Park said Kippo doesn’t believe in algorithms. The dating app for gamers allows users to sign up to create profiles where they can highlight their favorite games, star signs, and even personality type. The app matches users, who can then chat and play games with each other. Although it’s free, there is a premium version for $ 9.99.

The idea of an app without algorithms is a bit contradictory, coming from what’s called an algorithmic trader, whose startup uses codes to match people.

“An algorithm implies that, if there is enough information about you, the perfect algorithm will spit out the perfect person for you,” he explained. “And then that’s it, you don’t have to do anything, you don’t have to use a dating app. It just tells you who the person is supposed to be with and the game is over. right? We don’t think this is the end of the game. “

Instead, it has an algorithm to correct the algorithm.

“We’re going to find a way to do as little as possible, thanks to our super advanced algorithm,” he said. “And our philosophy is that we want to make it a fun experience for you to enjoy going out, enjoying meeting people, and enjoying the whole experience.”

Park, an avid gamer, said he thinks the game and the encounters are going perfectly. Players already liked to interact online. They don’t want to play alone. Playing with someone relieves the pressure of dating. It is a shared experience. At the start of Kippo, Park met his current girlfriend on the app. For the past year and a half, gambling has been an activity they both enjoy at the same time as playing games, like Blade and Soul and It Takes Two.

“At the end of the day, the best environment for people to be open to meeting is one where they feel comfortable and have fun,” he said. “So the goal of Kippo is to create a fun environment. I think a lot of dating apps have this rigidity, where it feels like you’re going to a speed dating event, and there’s a lot of pressure, and everyone’s there for the same reason: dating. But if you say, ‘Hey, this is a great place to meet new people.’ “

Last year, Kippo raised $ 2 million in seed funding. He uses the money to revamp the app. with an emphasis on ‘experience’.

Early in his career, Park worked on Wall Street as a quantitative analyst, also known as an algorithmic trader, using algorithms to predict the performance of tech companies. It was a prelude to his move to Raya, a celebrity dating app.

After starting the business with Cheeyoon Lee, he started talking on TikTok about algorithms for dating apps and scams, sometimes mocking other apps for “selling” data.

“Dating apps rip you off in three ways: Number one dating apps will create fake profiles of sexy girls and guys and they’ll show you that first, especially new dating apps,” he said. stated in a published video.

(..) Number two dating apps will remember your matches unless you start paying (..) Number three dating apps sell your data and it’s scary how they know you based on your dating habits. scanning. “

For his part, Park said they are focused on getting 10 million Kippo users. The app had around 25,000 users per month last year.

But Park believes the game is evolving with esports competitions and spaces like Twitch where players can stream their game live. Even Alexandra Ocasio Cortez used a platform to reach her constituents. Meetings are no exception. The pandemic has seen record levels of growth in gaming, which some say is expected to reach more than $ 200 billion by 2024.

“Everyone becomes a player to some extent,” Park joked. “If you look at Gen Z, almost everyone is playing some kind of social video game because video games are becoming more of a social thing than just a thing to do.”
