Kathmandu [Nepal]Sep 18 (NNA): A majority of the members of the Impeachment Recommendation Committee have recommended the impeachment of suspended Chief Justice of Nepal, Cholendra Shumsher Rana.
The 11-member impeachment panel formed by the lower house on Saturday completed its investigation and submitted it to House Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota. The submitted report was approved by six members while the other five differed citing reasons.
Those who diverge from the report come from the opposition CPN-UML (Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist-Leninist) and the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP). The CPN-UML opposition pointed to an eight-point difference in the impeachment panel report, saying the panel report could not be accepted because it resembled the intent of the alliance.

The chairman of the impeachment committee, Ram Bahadur Bista, is tasked with making the final decision to impeach Rana. Her vote decides whether Rana is impeached or not. However, President Bista has yet to make a decision.
It has been said that the new parliament that will be formed after the November 20 elections will make a decision on Rana’s suspension. Bista said the committee will decide that the impeachment process will be continued by the next parliament and pursue the suspension, citing an example from India dating back three decades.
On February 1, no fewer than 98 MPs filed a blanket indictment against Rana, claiming he was against the ruling coalition. In March, the impeachment was tabled in parliament and an 11-member recommending committee was formed. (ANI)
