Man arrested after body found in Sligo flat

A man suspected of murder has been arrested after a man’s body was discovered in Sligo last night.

This is the second murder in the city this week.

Gardaí were called to a house near Connaughton Road at 10.30pm last night.

It is understood that relatives had found the body of a man in his 50s at his terraced house in the City View estate. He had suffered significant physical injuries.

The scene was preserved overnight and a forensic examination is taking place there this morning. The man’s body remains at the scene, pending an autopsy.

In a follow-up operation after the discovery, the local gardaí, backed by the Armed Support Unit, arrested a man in his twenties on suspicion of murder.

He was detained at a location in town at 1:45 a.m. this morning. The man is being held at Sligo Garda station, where he can be questioned for 24 hours.

The overnight developments followed the discovery of the remains of another man in the city on Monday evening. The mutilated body of Aidan Moffitt was found at his home in Cartron Heights.

Last night gardaí said they were investigating whether Mr Moffitt might have met his killer online. They are also looking into the possibility that there was a hate motive for the murder.

Aidan Moffitt’s body was found Monday at his Cartron Heights home

The forensic expertise of the twin house will resume this morning.

Detectives spent much of yesterday carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the Cartron area. They have appealed to anyone in the area, at any stage, until 8:30 p.m. Monday evening to contact them.

Investigating gardaí can be contacted at a dedicated phone number at Sligo Garda Station Incident Room on 071-9157088, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111, or any Garda station.

As the investigation continues, gardaí has issued detailed guidance for those using online dating apps.

They said people should always make sure they have a facial image of the person they intend to meet, close friends should be told about meeting plans, and venues for meetings should always be shared with a trusted third party.

Additionally, they advised people to be extremely careful about consuming offered food or drink unless they see it being prepared before it is offered to them.
