Netflix launches newcomers like Will and Kate in season 6 – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: After an exhaustive casting process, the Netflix drama The crown reunited with her Prince William and Kate Middleton for the show’s sixth season. Producers opted for a double dose of William, with two actors cast to portray him as he transitions from teenager to young adult, Deadline has learned.

Teenager Rufus Kampa takes on the role of Prince William at the age of 15, while Ed McVey will portray the prince’s later teenage and adult years. Newcomer Meg Bellamy has been cast as Kate. All three are new to television roles.

Kampa will appear in episodes depicting how the British royal family coped with the tragic death of William’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in August 1997.

Although still young, Kampa already has an extensive set of credits for stage roles. He made his professional stage debut in the West End three years ago playing the title role in The Diary of Adrian Mole by Sue Townsend 13 & 3/4s: The Musical and starred in numerous productions outside the West End.

McVey’s plot will include William’s courtship with Kate, including how they met while both studying art history at the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, in 2001. The couple, married in 2011, are now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

McVey graduated from Drama Center London in 2021 and has since understudied the play Camp Siegfried at the Old Vic in London. A quick look at his profile on the Spotlight casting site shows he has several skills required for the role of Prince William: he can play the enhanced RP “Queen’s English” accent; is proficient with firearms, helpful because William served in the military, and can snowboard – the young royals loved snow sports.

Kate will be played by new talent Bellamy, whose career to date has involved amateur theater and filmmaking. She and Kampa were auditioned by casting directors after submitting self-recorded videos following a casting call on social media.

The crown Season 6 marks the professional screen debuts for all three. They begin filming later this year.

The fifth season of The crown is due to premiere on Netflix in November with Imelda Staunton portraying Queen Elizabeth, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Jonathan Pryce as the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip; Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana; and Dominic West as Prince of Wales.

West’s own son, Senan West, portrays William in the season five finale, with Timothee Sambor also playing the young prince. Teddy Hawley and Will Powell will both play young Prince Harry, with Harry yet to be cast in season six.

McVey is represented by AHA Talent.
